Japan Standard Industrial Classification (JSIC)

The Japan Standard Industrial Classification (JSIC) is a classification system established as a standard for organizing and categorizing statistical data on industries in Japan. It is used to analyze economic activities and industrial structures within Japan, providing the foundational data necessary for appropriate policy planning and the creation of economic indicators.

Overview of the Japan Standard Industrial Classification

1. Purpose and Background:

  • The JSIC is used to systematically classify economic activities, enabling the collection and analysis of statistical data. This classification allows for a consistent understanding of various industrial activities, which is crucial for the development of economic and industrial policies.
  • The first edition was established in 1949, and since then, regular revisions have been made to reflect changes in the economy and the development of new industries.

2. Structure and Hierarchy:

  • The JSIC divides industries into four hierarchical levels: major divisions, divisions, groups, and details. This structure allows for a detailed classification of industries, from broad categories to specific business activities.
  • For example, under the major division “Manufacturing,” there are divisions like “Food Manufacturing” and “Chemical Manufacturing,” which are further broken down into groups and details.

3. Main Areas of Use:

  • Statistical Surveys: It is used in the collection and analysis of data for various government statistics, such as the Population Census, Economic Census, and Industrial Statistics Survey.
  • Analysis of Business Activities: The JSIC is also used for classifying industries in business activities, market research, and as an indicator for understanding trends and structural changes within industries.
  • Marketing Activities: In marketing activities utilizing corporate databases, industry classification is widely used for data selection and extraction based on industry categories.
  • Policy Formulation: The government refers to data based on the JSIC when planning and implementing economic and industrial policies.

4. Relation to International Standards:

5. Revisions and Updates:

  • The latest JSIC undergoes periodic reviews and revisions to reflect changes in industrial structures due to globalization and technological innovation. This ensures that the classification continues to accurately represent modern economic activities.
